  • Union says current fuel allocation inadequate for fieldwork

The Public Health Inspectors Union of Sri Lanka (PHIUSL) warned that it would resort to trade union action if disciplinary measures were taken against its members unable to perform their duties due to fuel-related issues.

Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (22), PHIUSL Secretary Chamil Muthukuda said the current allocation of eight litres per week for motorcycles had been allocated for personal use.

However, he noted that PHIs were frequently required to travel long distances during field duties, making the existing allocation inadequate. He urged the Government to introduce a dedicated fuel quota specifically for official duties to ensure uninterrupted public health services.

Muthukuda added that although the union did not intend to initiate trade union action solely to demand an increase in the fuel quota, it would take action if disciplinary measures were taken against members unable to perform their duties due to fuel shortages. “With health services classified as an essential service, there should be a mechanism enabling health sector employees to obtain fuel without having to wait in long queues for petrol and diesel."

Speaking further, he said PHIs were currently paid a fuel allowance of Rs. 1,200 for every 600 kilometres travelled. He noted that, considering the recent fuel price increase, the amount was insufficient to cover actual fuel costs.
