The main parliamentary opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), is still deliberating whether to initiate legal action against the Government over the alleged failure to mitigate damage caused by natural disasters triggered by Cyclone Ditwah.
When asked by The Daily Morning, SJB General Secretary and Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said, “We have not yet reached a final decision. Discussions are going on.”
The remarks come amid calls from certain party members to hold the Government accountable. Member of Parliament S. M. Marikkar, while addressing a press conference last week, noted the current administration bears responsibility for damages caused by the disaster situation.
He said that steps would be taken to file a criminal case against the Government, citing what he described as a lack of preparedness and failure to act despite prior warnings. He compared the current disaster to the Easter Sunday terror attacks in terms of its human impact and indicated that legal action would be pursued in a similar manner to cases filed against the Rajapaksa family (a reference to the family of former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa) over the country’s financial crisis.
