UN warns of increased rainfall in Sri Lanka due to El Niño

01 Sep 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The United Nations has warned that Sri Lanka could experience above-normal rainfall in the latter part of 2026 due to prevailing El Niño conditions.

Significant rainfall is expected in October and November, with above-average rainfall also possible from December to February.

The UN noted that increased rainfall could raise the risk of floods and disruption to agricultural activities.
