The Irrigation Department has opened four spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir by one foot each due to heavy rainfall, releasing water into the river at a rate of 2,800 cubic feet per second.
Residents living along both banks of the river downstream of the reservoir have been urged to remain vigilant and monitor changes in water levels.
The public has also been advised to exercise caution as river levels may fluctuate.
