- Experts and authorities including SPC mull options including removing page with questionable web link reference
- No need for reprinting, says Edu. Secy.
The Education Ministry has stated that changes to the Grade Six English language module, which was found to contain a reference to an inappropriate website, can be carried out before 22 January, when education reforms are due to commence.
Speaking to The Daily Morning, the Ministry Secretary, Nalaka Kaluwewa said that the State Printing Corporation (SPC) has informed the Ministry that whatever changes are proposed could be implemented within that time frame. He said that several options are being considered, including the removal of the page containing the questionable link, and that officials are currently assessing whether such a step would affect the overall content of the module.
He added the final decision would be made based on the advice of the relevant experts, noting that he would not make that determination on his own as the Secretary. "This issue is expected to be resolved before 22 January and there is no indication the modules will need to be reprinted at present. Instead, the printed books can continue to be used once the necessary changes are made."
The distribution of the newly printed Grade Six English language module, prepared by the National Institute of Education, was suspended with immediate effect after a complaint led to the discovery of a reference to an inappropriate website. The Ministry subsequently launched an investigation into the matter and lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department.
