- Red Level 3 evac warnings to CP areas
A landslide has occurred in Bambarapana along the Welimada–Maspanna Road due to continuous rainfall. Vehicular movement along the road was disrupted as a result of the landslide. The incident took place on Monday evening (5), leading to the temporary suspension of bus services on the Welimada–Maspanna route. At present, the Uva Paranagama Pradeshiya Sabha is engaged in clearing the debris at the affected location, and traffic has since been restored to normal.
Meanwhile, a number of roads in Galle have been flooded due to heavy rainfall in the area. The Galle–Wakwella Road, near the Galle Police Station, has also been submerged. Galle Police noted that traffic on the Galle–Wakwella Road has been disrupted as a result. Continuous rainfall has been reported in Galle.
The low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, to the Southeast of Sri Lanka is likely to intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours, the Meteorology Department has warned. The system is expected to move towards the East coast of the island in the next few hours.
Elsewhere, the National Building Research Organisation has issued a Level Three Red landslide evacuation warning for three areas in two Districts within the Central Province (CP). Accordingly, the warning which was issued at 12 p.m. yesterday (06) will remain in effect for the next 24 hours. The warnings are in effect for residents of Udadumbara in the Kandy District, and Nildandhahinna and Walapane in the Nuwara Eliya District.
Landslide warnings advising residents to remain alert have been issued for three Districts, while cautionary advisories have been issued for four other Districts. A Level Two Amber landslide warning has been issued to the following areas: the Badulla District – Kandaketiya, the Matale District – Wilgamuwa, and the Nuwara Eliya District – Hanguranketha and Mathurata. A Level One Yellow landslide warning has been issued to the following areas: the Badulla District - Badulla, Haaliela, Passara, Lunugala, Welimada, and Meegahakiula, the Kandy District – Doluwa, the Matale District - Ambanganga Korale, and the Monaragala District – Bibile.
