• Investigations continue into death of C.D. Wickramaratne 

The final rites of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D Wickramaratne will be conducted with full police honours today (20). 

Police Media Spokesperson and Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said that the decision had been taken as Wickramaratne was a retired IGP.

The body of the country's 35th IGP is currently lying at a private funeral parlour in Colombo and was available for public respects from yesterday (19).

Wickramaratne died at his residence on 18 July. Police suspect that the incident was a suicide. He had allegedly used the firearm issued to his security officer.

The Judicial Medical Officer of the Colombo East Base Hospital in Mulleriyawa returned an open verdict following the post-mortem examination. Body samples have been forwarded to the Government Analyst (GA) for further examination.

Police stated that the GA has also taken custody of the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.

Investigations are being carried out by the Western Province South Crime Division and the Malabe Police.

Police added that statements have already been recorded from Wickramaratne's wife and three security officers as part of the ongoing investigation.
