- Mentions fake medical reports issued to grant spl. treatment to some
- Prez acknowledges Prisons Dept. officials unlawfully releasing inmates
The Medical and Civil Rights Professional Association of Doctors (MCPA) has called for a formal investigation into doctors at prison hospitals suspected of misusing their authority.
Referring to increasing allegations of malpractice within the Prisons Department, MCPA President Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa told the media that senior officials and prison hospital doctors who allegedly issued false medical reports to grant special treatment to prominent figures, including politicians and senior officials held in remand, must be investigated.
Meanwhile, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that several key State institutions, including the Departments of Police, Immigration and Emigration, Prisons, and Motor Traffic, have collapsed due to official malpractices, and urged public support for the Government’s efforts to rebuild them. Speaking at the National Poson Festival in Anuradhapura yesterday (10), President Dissanayake said that public trust in key State institutions has eroded in recent years.
“Some Police officers are protecting criminals instead of enforcing the law. At the Department of Immigration and Emigration, certain officials have issued passports illegally – even to criminals. Some officials in the Prisons Department have unlawfully released inmates, and there are also reports of illegal activities involving staff at the Department of Motor Traffic. The public is losing confidence in these institutions,” he said.
To restore a sense of civic responsibility, he said that civility must return to society. “We are committed to rebuilding these State institutions. To achieve this, we need the continued support of every citizen. We must not give up. It is time to bring an end to this era of decline and work towards a better future,” he said.
Multiple attempts to contact the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni and Prisons Spokesperson and Commissioner, Gamini Dissanayake regarding the issues, proved futile.
