- Tangalle SI bailed over sexual assault on and threats to female cop
A Police Constable (PC) has been arrested for soliciting a bribe of Rs. 3,000 from an individual, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has confirmed.
According to a complaint made by a resident of Raddolugama, the PC was taken into custody on Monday (14) night. The PC had reportedly taken the complainant’s driving licence in connection with a traffic offence and demanded a bribe of Rs. 3,000 to return the licence without initiating legal action. Accordingly, the officer attached to the Raddolugama Police Station was arrested by the CIABOC on Monday night on charges of soliciting a bribe. The suspect was scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court (MC).
Meanwhile, the Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Tangalle Police, who was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting and threatening a female Police officer from the same police station, was produced before the Tangalle MC on Tuesday (15). Accordingly, Magistrate Shamala Butawatte ordered the suspect to be released on two surety bails of Rs. 200,000 each, and a cash bail of Rs. 10,000. The case was then adjourned until 28 July.
