  • ‘Tentigo’ Director Ilango Ram on the film’s recognition at the 27th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

Lights, camera, cultural revelation! Step into the world of filmmaker Ilango Ram, the mastermind behind the captivating film Tentigo. The movie recently won a First Feature Competition Special Jury Prize at the 27th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, held in Estonia from 3-19 November.

Accepting the award, Ilango said: “I want to thank my producer and my wife Hiranya Perera, because we shot this film at the most difficult time in Sri Lanka. There was no power, there was no gas, and there was no fuel at the time, but she somehow managed to shoot the film.”

Tentigo is Ram’s first feature film and had its world premiere at the film festival. The movie is directed and written by Ram and stars Kaushalya Fernando, Priyantha Sirikumara, Thusitha Laknath, Ranjith Panagoda, and Chandani Seneviratne.

With the movie receiving recognition internationally, The Daily Morning sat down with Ilango Ram, who took us on a rollercoaster ride through creativity, politics, and the resilience of Sri Lankan cinema. From the funeral-centric dark comedy that promises belly laughs and introspection, to the vibrant struggles of balancing arthouse finesse and commercial allure, Ram invited us to witness the magic behind the lens.

He unveiled the secrets of collaborative chemistry that fuel the film’s journey. Through challenges and triumphs, the cast and crew stand united, bringing Ilango’s vision to life with passion, dedication, and a touch of Sri Lankan flair.

Following are excerpts from the interview:

What inspired you to create Tentigo?

Tentigo was born out of a necessity for creative rejuvenation. I found myself immersed in a weighty script exploring the poignant narrative of a mother searching for her missing son amid the backdrop of war. Feeling the need for a mental palette-cleanser, I yearned for simplicity. That’s when the quirky and darkly comedic concept of Tentigo took shape – a departure from the gravity of my previous project. The film delves into the uproarious journey of two grown-up sons navigating the discreet challenge of adjusting their deceased father’s anatomy before the funeral, infusing humour into an otherwise sensitive topic.

How do you feel about showcasing Tentigo at Tallinn Black Nights and winning an award?

The opportunity to showcase Tentigo at the esteemed Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and winning an award is nothing short of a cinematic triumph. It’s not just a personal achievement but a collective victory for Sri Lankan cinema. This marks the third instance where a debut feature from our country has received acclaim at an A-list film festival, a testament to the burgeoning global recognition of our storytelling prowess. To achieve such accolades 17 years after the last one is a point of immense pride.

Describe your experience of being selected for competition and winning at an A-list film festival.

The experience of being selected for competition at an A-list film festival is akin to stepping onto a prestigious global stage. It’s a milestone that resonates profoundly with any filmmaker, and for me, as someone hailing from Sri Lanka, it’s a monumental achievement. The win at such a prestigious festival is etched in my memory as a colossal moment – a validation of the dedication, creativity, and collective effort that went into crafting Tentigo.

How do film festivals play a role in your filmmaking journey and the broader film industry?

Film festivals are not just platforms for showcasing films; they are gateways to a wider audience. They play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of a filmmaker’s journey by providing exposure on a global scale. This exposure not only benefits individual filmmakers but contributes significantly to the growth and recognition of the entire film industry.

What impact do you believe winning an award on a global stage will have on Tentigo in terms of audience reception, both globally and locally?

Winning an award on a global stage is a transformative moment for Tentigo. It catapults the film into the spotlight, attracting diverse global audiences. The recognition on the international stage not only establishes the film’s credibility but also sparks interest among audiences seeking something new and refreshing. Locally, where the appetite for innovative narratives is high, I am confident that Tentigo will find resonance and appreciation, creating a positive ripple effect within the Sri Lankan audience.

What were the challenges of shooting Tentigo during the economic crisis and people’s protests?

The making of Tentigo wasn’t just a creative endeavour; it was a daring venture into uncharted territories, both economically and politically. Shooting during the height of an economic crisis and ongoing protests posed formidable challenges. The period presented the toughest conditions for survival, let alone film production. The risks were substantial, and the decision to proceed was a testament to the resilience and unwavering commitment of my producer, Hiranya Perera Ilango, and the entire team. Against all odds, they managed to illuminate Tentigo in the midst of turbulent times.

How did the cast and crew contribute to overcoming the challenges of shooting Tentigo in tough conditions?

The making of Tentigo was a testament to the power of collective effort. The cast and crew played an integral role in overcoming the challenges posed by shooting in the toughest conditions. Their unwavering support and commitment during turbulent times were crucial, reflecting the essence of filmmaking as a collaborative and team-driven endeavour. The award received is not just a personal triumph but a recognition of the collective resilience of the entire team.

Can you elaborate on the themes explored in Tentigo and its universal resonance?

Tentigo transcends its comedic surface; it is a narrative with a profound exploration of honesty about people and their respective countries. The film serves as a genuine attempt to connect universally by presenting an honest depiction of human experiences. The overwhelming positive response from audiences, critics, programmers, and juries is a testament to its ability to resonate across cultural and geographical boundaries. It stands as a significant success in my journey as a filmmaker.

How did Tentigo challenge your filmmaking style, and what was the global audience’s reaction to this departure from traditional Sri Lankan cinema?

Tentigo marked a departure from the conventional narrative style associated with Sri Lankan cinema. Traditionally known for exploring heavy subject matters, this film presented a bold shift – a light-hearted comedy that defied expectations. The challenge was not just in crafting humour but in redefining the global perception of Sri Lankan cinema. The global audience responded with pleasant surprise, embracing this departure and reacting positively to the refreshing and unexpected narrative.

What can you share about your next projects, including the remake of Tentigo in India?

Tentigo has set a new benchmark, and the journey continues with exciting prospects. We’re gearing up to remake Tentigo in India, collaborating with Stone Bench Films – one of the prominent South Indian production companies. This endeavour marks a historic moment in Sri Lankan cinema as it becomes the first film from our country to be remade in a foreign land. Additionally, projects like Scent of a Dead Body, Rabbit Hole, and One Ticket to the Balcony are in development, exploring diverse genres and subjects. These projects have garnered positive reception at various project markets and workshops, instilling confidence that they will come to light soon.
