Sri Lanka has launched the Shrimp Industry Information System (SIIS), the country’s first fully integrated digital platform aimed at modernizing and safeguarding the shrimp farming sector.

Developed by the FAO with the Ministry of Fisheries and NAQDA and funded by South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries the system strengthens biosecurity and supports smarter, technology-driven aquaculture.

SIIS connects farmers, labs, regulators, and policymakers through real-time data, using Big Data, IoT, AI, and early-warning tools for disease control, food safety, and traceability.

Farmers can access the platform via mobile or web to monitor water quality, report disease outbreaks, and receive automated alerts.

The system also enables digital licensing, GIS mapping, and improved national-level oversight for better policy decisions.

South Korea’s Ambassador Miyon Lee commended the project as a model for digital transformation in sustainable aquaculture.

Officials, FAO representatives, and industry stakeholders attended the launch, marking a significant step forward in positioning Sri Lanka as a regional leader in smart, sustainable aquaculture.
