The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ advisory for severe lightning covering several parts of the country until 11.30 p.m. today (07).

The warning applies to the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, North-Central, North-Western, Southern, Western and Eastern provinces, as well as Vavuniya district.

The department said thundershowers with severe lightning are likely after 1.00 p.m., with temporary localized strong winds also expected.

The public has been advised to take precautions to minimise damage caused by lightning activity.
