The Attorney General (AG) has informed the Supreme Court the Government has decided to reconsider the Protection of Occupants draft Bill, which was recently presented to the Parliament.

This announcement was made by Additional Solicitor General, President’s Counsel Sumathi Dharmawardena, appearing on behalf of the AG, when the petitions challenging the Bill were taken up for consideration yesterday (9). He further informed the Court the Justice Minister has granted a one-month period, effective from 3 February of this year (2026), to receive comments and suggestions regarding the proposed Bill.

Accordingly, the Court decided to conclude the hearing of the petitions.
