A high-level discussion on regularizing school student transportation took place this morning (9) at the Prime Minister’s Office, under the patronage of Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya.

The meeting convened officials from the National Transport Commission (NTC) and the Education Ministry to review draft regulations for the school transport service and explore new proposals aimed at improving it.

Key topics discussed included addressing transportation needs resulting from school reorganization under recent education reforms, resolving existing issues, and enhancing the efficiency of the “Sisu Seriya” school transport system.

The discussion also emphasized strengthening child protection measures, preventing abuse and harassment during transport, and raising the professionalism and accountability of service providers.

The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration among the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the NTC, the Education Ministry, and the Child Protection Authority to establish a safe and reliable transportation system for students.

Participants included Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Ratnayake, NTC Chairman P.A. Chandrapala, and senior officials from both ministries.
