The National System Control Center (NSCC) says steps are underway to significantly reduce diesel-based electricity generation by the end of 2027 through the introduction of large-scale battery energy storage systems.

NSCC Chairman Dr. Pradeep Priyadarshana said Sri Lanka plans to add around 750 megawatts (MW) of battery storage capacity to the national grid by 2027.

He said the initiative could help save between Rs. 30 billion and Rs. 35 billion annually while reducing reliance on diesel and furnace oil for power generation.
