- ‘Govts. change, but govt. officials should carry out their duties. We do the same’: Rohanadeera
The Secretary-General of the Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera has refuted the allegations levelled against her by the civil society organisation Citizens of the People's Struggle that she has failed to properly guide the Speaker of the Parliament to handle the affairs of the Parliament.
Citizens of the People's Struggle’s General Secretary Chanaka Bandara claimed recently that when looking at the Parliament’s proceedings following the Election of the current Government, it was apparent that Rohanadeera has failed to properly guide the Speaker in carrying out Parliamentary affairs.
When contacted by The Daily Morning, Rohanadeera said: "There is not even a need to talk about such allegations. Although Governments change, government officials should carry out their duties. All Parliamentary officials including me do the same. We always fulfil our duties."
The said organisation had also handed over a letter to the Presidential Secretariat demanding that Rohanadeera be replaced, alleging that she was not suitable to hold the position due to political and practical reasons. Pointing out instances where newly-elected Parliamentarians did not adhere to Parliamentary traditions and fulfil their responsibilities in an acceptable manner, Bandara had claimed that Rohanadeera was responsible for guiding these parties to perform their responsibilities and that their failure to do so shows that she had failed to fulfil her duties.
