A man and a woman have been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly defrauding around Rs. 100 million in an 'Urumaya' deed scam.
The suspects allegedly promised victims freehold deeds under the national programme.
The woman, a resident of Bakamuna, was arrested on 26 August.
She is accused of convincing 164 people in Kalmunai to pay Rs. 600,000 each, posing as a lawyer.
The male suspect, arrested on 29 September, is accused of defrauding about 50 businessmen with similar promises, involving meetings in Colombo.
Authorities are taking legal action to confiscate Rs. 02 million fraudulently obtained by one suspect.
