Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya revealed that approximately $ 3,168 million was spent on fuel import expenditure during the first half of this year, making the cumulative spend significantly larger compared to the corresponding period in 2025.

The Prime Minister made the disclosure in Parliament on Friday (21) in response to an oral question raised on whether the impact of the Middle East conflicts on global crude oil prices and import costs had been assessed. 

She noted that during the corresponding period in 2025, the cost was $ 1,995 million, highlighting that fuel expenditure for this year has increased significantly compared to that period.
