- Pulsating K/O contest on the cards
High-riding Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan in the second semi-final of the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 today (11), with a place in the tournament final at stake at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, on Sunday (13).
The reigning champions Sri Lanka enter the knockout clash exuding confidence, having remained undefeated in the tournament.
Their latest victory over Bangladesh secured top spot in Group B and demonstrated the team’s ability to fight back under intense pressure.
Harshitha Samarawickrama played a crucial role in that dramatic victory, remaining unbeaten on 48.
For the Sri Lankans their batters and bowlers have clicked in unison and they will need to guard against complacency heading into the do-or-die phase of the competition.
They will also need to ensure that if they happen to bat first that wickets are not lost in clumps during the power-play and thereby keep wickets in hand to go after the death bowlers.
Pakistan, meanwhile, secured second place in Group A after an emphatic 72-run victory over Hong Kong.
Their qualification was highlighted by a remarkable performance from left-arm spinner Nashra Sundhu, who claimed a record-breaking 6 for 7 – the best T20I bowling figures by a Pakistan women’s cricketer.
The semifinal therefore promises an absorbing contest between a confident Sri Lankan side and a Pakistan team looking to build momentum at the most important stage of the competition.
Sri Lanka’s batting depth and experience will be tested against Pakistan’s improving bowling attack, while the Pakistan batters will face a major challenge against Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling unit.
Pakistan captain Fatima Sana has already acknowledged that her side will need to improve their batting, particularly in strike rotation and partnerships, if they are to overcome the unbeaten Sri Lankans.
For Sri Lanka, the objective is clear – reach the final and move one step closer to retaining their Asian crown.
Pakistan, however, will be determined to turn tables on the defending champions and earn a place in the event’s summit clash.
With everything on the line, Friday’s encounter promises to be a compelling battle for Asian supremacy.
The winner will advance to the final on 13 September facing the winner of Thursday’s clash between Group A winners India and Group B runners-up Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka will go into the contest having also beaten Pakistan in their three-match T20I bilateral series 2-1 at home back in July-August.
