• Amilani Perera and Rizwan Beyg take centre stage on Day 1

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the runway at the Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) 2023 Resortwear Edition Day 1, held at the National Art Gallery on 29 November, illuminated with a profound message as designers Amilani Perera and Rizwan Beyg unveiled their distinctive collections, leaving a lasting imprint on the audience.

Amilani Perera: Nurturing her in the digital age

Perera’s runway presentation transcended the boundaries of mere fashion, delving into the pressing issue of digital violence against women and girls. In a short yet impactful show, Perera continued her partnership with the United Nations Population Fund for the fourth consecutive year.

The collection served as a visual manifesto, weaving technology, societal responsibility, and the strength of survivors into a narrative tapestry. Disabled survivors of violence skilfully crafted webs, portraying the intricate nature of technology’s role in society. Vibrant blues and yellows entwined within these webs symbolised the positive energy society must channel for the wellbeing of women.

Perera’s artistic expression extended to sublimation prints hand-drawn by the designer herself, depicting the resilient “Sri Lankan Her” shielded by positive energy in the realm of social media. The collection’s poignant conclusion in absolute white resonated with the duality of happiness and sadness, reflecting the collective outcome of society’s energy.

Rizwan Beyg: Monochrome elegance

In stark contrast, the runway embraced a different aura as Beyg, the revered Pakistani designer, unveiled his collection of monochrome masterpieces. Renowned for his colourful vibrancy, Beyg took a departure from the norm, presenting a predominantly black ensemble adorned with meticulous embellishments, including intricate embroidery and crystals.

The collection exuded a timeless sophistication, as each ethnic outfit showcased the marriage of tradition and modernity. While the absence of the usual vivid hues might have surprised Beyg’s enthusiasts, the monochrome palette served as a canvas for the intricate details and craftsmanship that define his work.

Encore performance

The audience, left in awe by the two contrasting yet equally compelling showcases, was in for a surprise the following day, with Day 2 transforming the Shangri-La ballroom. Perera and Beyg took the stage once again, reinforcing the impact of their messages. The short duration of each show heightened the intensity, leaving attendees yearning for more.

As the CFW 2023 Resortwear Edition unfolded, it became evident that fashion, in its myriad forms, has the power not only to adorn bodies but to convey powerful narratives that resonate far beyond the runway.
