Two youth were rescued from drowning by Sri Lanka Police lifeguards after being swept away by a strong current at Ussangoda Beach, police said.

Officers from the Police Life-Saving Unit acted swiftly to save the duo, who were dragged into deeper waters while swimming.

After being brought safely ashore, the 19- and 34-year-old residents of Hungama were given first aid and reunited with their families.
