One of Sri Lanka’s esteemed cricket clubs, Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) which has produced the country’s 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga among a plethora of other distinguished past and current players is set to face demotion from the top-rung of the domestic first-class circuit.
The fate of the club based at Maitland Place in Colombo, is almost sealed as they face relegation to a bottom tier from the elite Premier League Tournament, due to below-par performances in the said competition, informed sources revealed.
Despite boasting a talented squad, the team had struggled throughout the ongoing season, climaxing in their demotion which will be a first for them in their history which dates back to the start of the 20th century.
According to critics the club’s looming relegation will mark a significant shift in the domestic cricket landscape.
