The Department of Meteorology has issued a Red Alert as a deep depression located approximately 120 km south-east of Batticaloa is very likely to intensify into a Cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours.
The system is expected to cause very heavy falls above 200 mm in the Northern, North-central, Central, and North-western provinces.
Very strong winds of 60 to 70 km/h are forecast across most parts of the island.
Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.
The public is urged to be vigilant until 30 November 2025.
