Tourist arrivals top 190,000 in August

Sri Lanka welcomed 191,704 international tourists in August 2026, with India continuing to dominate the tourism market, according to the latest figures released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).

According to the SLTDA, India topped with 47,253 arrivals, representing around 25% of all tourists who visited Sri Lanka during the month, while The United Kingdom (UK) was the second-largest source market recording 19,588 arrivals, while China ranked third with 12,321 arrivals.

Also, Germany and France rounded out the top five markets, with 11,405 and 10,885 arrivals respectively.

Meanwhile, the August figures pushed Sri Lanka’s cumulative tourist arrivals for the first eight months of 2026 to 1,535,122, where India remained the largest contributor during the January-August period with 385,483 arrivals, followed by the UK with 149,989; China with 100,828 arrivals, while Germany contributed 90,001 and the Russian Federation 80,845, according to SLTDA.
