Terror threat in India: SL security on alert

09 Jul 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa In the wake of the terror threats in India, Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities assured that the country is on high alert since last year’s Easter Sunday terror attacks and that all necessary security measures have already been put in place countrywide to prevent any similar attack in the future. Speaking to The Morning, Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne said that all necessary security measures have been taken by law enforcement authorities not specifically because of the terror threats in India, but because of last year’s terror attacks in Sri Lanka. “Security measures have been taken as per the intelligence information,” he said. Elaborating on the situation in churches countrywide, SSP Senaratne said high security had already been put in place as necessary in all locations, especially in churches. “If a special request is made by a certain church for additional security, considering a special function in that respective church, the authorities will issue additional security,” he added. Meanwhile, when contacted by The Morning, Military Spokesman Brigadier Chandana Wickramasinghe noted that all security measures are in place as necessary and routine meetings were also being conducted within the relevant law enforcement authorities. “The Defence Secretary, the commanders of tri-forces, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and intelligence services are very well connected and are evaluating each and every aspect with regard to national security at present and (would) take necessary precautions accordingly,” he added.
