Ethnicity irrelevant when electing MPs: Sanath

People should not look at ethnic differences and create divisions between Sinhalese and Tamils when electing their representatives at a general election, former Sri Lanka Cricket captain, Sanath Jayasuriya said.Jayasuriya made this observation on Saturday (1) in Nuwara Eliya during a public meeting held in support of Sri Lanka Cricket legend, Muttaiah Muralitharan’s brother, Muttaiah Prabhakaran. Prabhakaran is contesting under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) from the Nuwara Eliya District at Wednesday’s general election. Jayasuriya explained to the public that the public should focus on casting their votes for candidates who would sincerely address their issues and provide solutions. “People should not think that they should always vote for any particular candidate or a candidate from a particular party as a pattern. Focus should be on who would provide solutions to their problems,” he said. According to Jayasuriya, some candidates were trying to garner votes by creating divisions on ethnic lines. “People can have confidence in Muttaiah Muralitharan’s brother Muttaiah Prabhakaran since he can carry out social welfare measures and carry out many programmes for the benefit of the people in the area with government patronage,” Jayasuriya said.
