The University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Education is considering establishing an intelligence unit to report incidents of ragging and to keep a close watch on instigators of such harassments at universities.
The decision came after newly appointed Minister of Education Prof. G.L. Peiris stated that there will be zero tolerance on instigators of ragging.
Speaking to The Morning, UGC Chairman senior Prof. Samapath Amaratunga said: “Soon after the Minister assumed duties, at the first meeting we convened to discuss the issues in the higher education sphere, a special focus was turned towards the ragging incidents that took place recently. We discussed at length about designing an incident reporting and complaint escalating process that would do justice to the undergraduates who are victimised.”
Prof. Amaratunga added that vice chancellors of all state universities have been briefed about the necessity to come up with a process for each of their universities with the assistance of anti-ragging communities, parents, undergraduates, the Police, and legal counsels.
He elaborated that only 5% of the student population is involved in ragging and that too should be further reduced in the years to come, also noting that in comparison to the situation 30 years ago, the current situation is in much better standards.
