The mounting backlog of child abuse cases that went over 12,000 has now been brought down to 851 pending cases by the Child Protection Unit of the Attorney General’s (AG) Department.
PA to the AG Nishara Jayaratne, speaking to The Morning, noted: “The backlog cases of child abuse which were pending hearings were brought down from 12,968 cases to 851 since the time he assumed office in May 2019. The backlog had been created due to various administrative issues, which President’s Counsel Dappula de Livera was able to clear off since his appointment.”
The Morning reliably learnt from inside sources that the backlog was created as a result of inefficiency displayed by the legal teams that were assigned to handle such cases.
