RTI Commission to be digitised

11 Mar 2026

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to digitise the operations of the Right to Information (RTI) Commission.

The Commission, which was established under the provisions of the RTI Act, No. 12 of 2016, is responsible for examining and issuing decisions on appeals submitted under the Act. At present, most of the processes related to handling appeals are documented manually due to the limited technological facilities available to the Commission.

In order to improve efficiency in its operations, a project has been proposed to digitise the Commission’s functions. Funding for the initiative will be provided through a grant of United States Dollars 200,000 from the Open Society Foundation based on recommendations made by the World Bank.

The funds are expected to be used to purchase the necessary equipment, develop software systems, obtain specialised technical expertise, and strengthen the capacity of the Commission’s existing staff. Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Mass Media Minister to implement the project.
