Skills development for domestic workers | From Housemaid to Housekeeping assistant

23 Sep 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa Steps are being taken to change the designation of female domestic migrant workers from “housemaid” to “domestic housekeeping assistant” in the future in order to upgrade them to the skilled labour category, stated the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE). Speaking to The Morning, SLBFE General Manager W.M.V. Wansekara said in the future, all domestic workers would be sent with NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) Level 3 qualifications, where they will be properly educated and trained in their field. Furthermore, those who return to Sri Lanka after working as domestic workers in some countries would be upgraded to NVQ Level 4. In addition, possibilities were being sought to direct them to the local hospitality and healthcare sectors. There’s a good demand in the healthcare sector, Wansekara said, adding that those who have the NVQ Level 4 qualification could seek job opportunities in foreign countries as caregivers. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar are the main Middle Eastern destinations for domestic employees from Sri Lanka, while Japan and South Korea are most popular from the Far East destinations. According to statistics, around 64,965 people left Sri Lanka to work as housemaids in 2018.
