The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) says 37 of the 53 dengue-related deaths reported in Sri Lanka this year have been women, urging people to seek early medical treatment as soon as symptoms appear.

Acting Director Dr. Kapila Kannangara said many women delay treatment while continuing household responsibilities, increasing the risk of severe complications.

He also warned against relying on home remedies or traditional treatments, advising patients to seek prompt medical care and use only paracetamol for fever unless otherwise directed by a doctor.

Sri Lanka has reported 74,478 dengue cases so far this year, including 19,100 cases in July.
