The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur in most parts of the island after 1:00 p.m. today (20).  

The department also cautioned that these thunderstorms may bring temporary, localized strong winds, posing additional risks to safety and property.  

The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize damage and protect themselves from lightning activity. Authorities recommend seeking shelter indoors and avoiding refuge under trees during thunderstorms. 

People are also advised to stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and water bodies during adverse weather conditions.  

The Department of Meteorology cautioned against using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms. 

Travellers are advised to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats until the weather improves.
