‘SC econ. crisis ruling and ‘bankruptcy’ PSC unlinked’ Speaker

‘SC econ. crisis ruling and ‘bankruptcy’ PSC unlinked’ Speaker

Asserting that the recent Supreme Court (SC) ruling which held that two former Heads of State and several others are responsible for the economic crisis in the country does not have any impact on the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) which looks into the country's economic bankruptcy, the Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana said that it is the said PSC’s members who should decide on its future course of actions.

The SC on 14 November ruled that former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former President, Prime Minister and Finance Minister and incumbent Government Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa and several others are responsible for the economic crisis. Since the ruling, opposition political parties including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya are arguing that there is no need for a PSC to look into the matter as the country's highest Court has ruled on the matter.

When queried by The Daily Morning as to whether there would be any change to the PSC in consideration of the SC ruling, Abeywardana said that the ruling does not have any impact on the PSC's proceedings. "There is no impact on the PSC is there? The PSC has been appointed, so it is its members who should decide on what needs to be done."

The SC recently ruled that the three Rajapaksa brothers, the former Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governors Ajith Nivard Cabraal and Emeritus Prof. W.D. Lakshman, former Finance Ministry and Treasury Secretary S.R. Attygalle, former Presidential Secretary P.B. Jayasundara and the Monetary Board members of the CBSL are responsible for the economic crisis.

The PSC chaired by ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna General Secretary and Government MP, attorney Sagara Kariyawasam was recently appointed by the Speaker to investigate the economic crisis and make appropriate recommendations. The Opposition MPs who were appointed as its members are however boycotting the PSC in protest of Kariyawasam's appointment as the PSC Chairman, and its composition.
