With Local Government (LG) councils being formed, it is learnt that the administrations of nine LG bodies are yet to be formed due to delays caused by disagreements, lack of quorum, and legal issues.
The Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha, Anamaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha, and Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha in the North Western Province are facing such delays along with other LG bodies including the Beruwala Urban Council, Bandaragama Pradeshiya Sabha, Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha, Seethawakapura Urban Council, and Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha.
Council elections to the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha, Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha, Seethawakapura Urban Council, and Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha have been postponed due to a lack of quorum.
Disagreements among members on the voting method has resulted in the postponement of the Bandaragama Pradeshiya Sabha election.
The Beruwala Urban Council election has been temporarily halted due to an Appeal Court decision to only hold elections once all members of the council have been informed of their selection in writing.
Many postponements had been due to parties not having a clear majority to establish power.
However, Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Deputy Minister Ruwan Senarath told The Sunday Morning yesterday (5) that the reconvening dates had been announced at the postponements and that the relevant provincial commissioners had been informed.
“They were all given dates to reconvene within a month’s time. The matter will be resolved within the next two weeks,” Senarath said.
While the majority of the council administrations at LGs have been formed, the members who have been selected but not gazetted yet are likely to be gazetted next week.
