The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for severe lightning in the Uva and Eastern provinces and the Mullaitivu, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts.

Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected in several areas, with temporary localised strong winds also possible.

The public has been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas and taking shelter under trees, and stay away from open water bodies.

People have also been advised to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to the mains during thunderstorms, and to exercise caution around fallen trees and power lines.
