Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekera told Parliament that the Sri Lanka Air Force had only four helicopters, two Bell 212s and two Mi-17s available for rescue operations during the recent disaster.

He explained that the shortage of aircraft necessitated the use of VIP helicopters for emergency evacuations. 

The Deputy Minister praised the military for its prompt response, noting that rescue efforts began immediately from November 26 when the disaster struck.
