Govt. targets 50% local big onion production

The Department of Agriculture has launched a programme to produce 50% of Sri Lanka’s annual big onion requirement locally.

The country consumes around 320,000 metric tonnes of big onions annually, with the department targeting half of this demand through the upcoming Yala season harvest.

The programme will promote modern cultivation methods to increase yields and reduce production costs, while encouraging farmers to return to big onion cultivation.
