The new wave of skills What got us here won’t get us there

Skills aren’t just buzzwords you can drop in interviews or sprinkle across your CV. They are your real-life superpowers, more like the tools you use every day to navigate life. Whether you are managing a challenging project, stepping into university, launching your own business, or figuring out your next move, skills are what make the difference.

Some skills, like making a killer presentation or brushing up a CV, are practical. Others, like empathy, active listening, or critical/design thinking, quietly lift us up and set us apart wherever we go.

But what makes skills so special? It’s not actually about how many you collect, but how you use them too. Good communication will open doors. Emotional intelligence smoothens the bumps in friendships and teams. Problem-solving turns worries into action plans. And skills like design thinking help us see the world differently, solving problems with creativity and heart instead of just copying what has been done before.

If you look closely, you will agree that skills aren’t static – they grow. Sometimes with practice, sometimes through setbacks, but always alongside a little courage. And unlike grades or fancy job titles, nobody can take them from you. The more you build, the more you become the kind of person others want on their team and in their lives.

Adaptability is the ultimate future skill. Those willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn won’t just keep up, they will shape the change defining tomorrow. Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents, digital employees, and automated workflows aren’t coming; they are already here. My previous and current role involved working in companies developing AI agents. I was able to see the shift right in front of me.

Change is no longer a disruption – it’s the constant. And the ones who will thrive are the curious, the bold, and the learners who turn every challenge into a chance to grow. To grow, we need to adapt, experiment, and keep learning. Those of us who embrace change, build new skills, and lean into curiosity will not only survive but thrive.

That’s what this column is all about. I’m no expert, but I wanted to explore this topic, breaking down not just which skills matter now, but also how you can practice, sharpen, and own them – one story, one experiment, also maybe one laugh at a time.

I am building a company centred around this too; it’s a mission I want to associate with.

For this week’s takeaway request, I have the following for you: start spotting the skills all around you. Notice how your friends solve problems, how your favourite teacher explains tough ideas, or how your parents get through a tough day. Every one of those moments is a lesson, waiting for you to make it yours.

Let’s learn, unlearn, relearn, and grow together.
