As part of its continued commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business practices, Cargills Food and Beverage Ltd through its brands KIST and KNUCKLES, has initiated a new plastic waste management project on Sri Lanka’s Southern Expressway, deploying four plastic collection bins at the Welipenna Service Area to address the growing issue of plastic waste generated by travellers.
The project aims to encourage responsible disposal habits among commuters while ensuring that collected plastic is channelled into formal recycling systems. The Southern Expressway, being a major transit route with consistently high vehicular movement, presents a critical opportunity to intercept plastic waste at source.
This initiative is part of Cargills’ broader sustainability agenda, which places environmental stewardship at the core of its operations. It complements ongoing efforts such as the Ocean Strainer Project in Boralesgamuwa and Wanathamulla, which helps prevent plastic waste from entering waterways, together with plastic collection bins placed in key locations to strengthen post-consumer waste recovery. In addition, KIST & KNUCKLES have also adopted the Crow Island Beach to support the protection and preservation of the coastal environment.
KIST is a renowned local brand known for crafting international-quality sauces, jams, fruit-based beverages and other condiments using fresh produce sourced from farmers across Sri Lanka. KNUCKLES Spring Water is a premium natural mineral water brand bottled at source in the pristine Knuckles Mountain Range, preserving its natural purity and quality. KIST and KNUCKLES are marketed by Cargills Food and Beverage Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of Cargills (Ceylon) PLC.
