Muslims in Sri Lanka will celebrate Eid al-Adha (Hajj Festival) on Saturday, 7 June, the Colombo Grand Mosque confirmed today (28).

The announcement follows the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the final month in the Islamic calendar. Consequently, ‘The Day of Arafa’ will be observed on Friday, 6 June.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, and coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah.

As one of the most significant Islamic festivals, it highlights sacrifice, devotion, and charity, and is observed by Muslims worldwide.
