The Maha Sangha has endorsed proposed legal reforms concerning the treatment of Buddhist monks in prison, while calling for further discussions among the 31 factions of the three main Buddhist chapters to establish a common implementation framework.
At a Buddha Sasana Council meeting held on 20 October, a committee appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presented proposals to amend Sections 356 and 550 of the relevant legislation.
One proposal would allow imprisoned monks to wear their robes when taken to court or for official purposes, subject to a recommendation from the relevant Nikaya chapter or Sangha Council.
