At sponsor felicitation and media launch: ‘Green Machine’ celebrates legacy and future

10 Apr 2026

Isipathana College, one of Sri Lanka’s most recognised school rugby institutions, held its sponsor felicitation ceremony and media launch on Wednesday (8) at the Granbell Hotel, Colombo. The event marked a significant moment in the 2026 rugby calendar, bringing together sponsors, stakeholders, alumni, and media to acknowledge the team’s legacy and upcoming season.

Rugby at Isipathana College is rooted in a tradition dating back to the late 1950s. Since its formal establishment in the early 1960s, the College has developed into a leading force in school rugby. Following its first inter-school victory in 1963, Isipathana quickly rose to national prominence and has since maintained a reputation for excellence.

Widely regarded as the “Kings of Schools Rugby” in Sri Lanka, the College has built an unparalleled record, including 14 President’s Trophy Championships. The “Green Machine” has sustained its success through discipline, resilience, and a strong winning culture.

Over the decades, Isipathana has secured six Triple Championships, 18 Schools Rugby Sevens titles, 14 League Championships, and 15 Knockout Championships, while recording more than 12 unbeaten seasons. The school has produced over 70 national-level players and contributed leading referees such as Dilroy Fernando and Nizam Jamaldeen, as well as notable national coaches including Ana Saranapala, M. D. Ifthikar, and Sanath Martis.

A key highlight this year is the appointment of Sanath Martis as head coach, marking a significant return for the veteran coach. A former national player and accomplished figure in schools rugby, Martis brings extensive experience and a clear strategic direction for the team. Former Fiji international Saimoni Rokini joins the coaching team as Consultant, adding expertise in both 15s and 7s formats.

The 2026 squad will be captained by loose forward Shaakib Zumri, with co-vice captains Nimatha Sandeepa and Abdul Azeez forming the leadership group.

At the event, recognition was given to main sponsor Fortune Soy, along with co-sponsors KFC and Sense.lk. The programme is supported by Bronze Sponsors Macson Mesh Industries, TVS, and MAS, while UDDS joins as a Special Sponsor. Group 89 serves as the Under-14 team sponsor.

Additional partnerships include Pearl Beach as Hospitality Partner; Camera.lk and SONY as Camera Partners; Link Natural Samahan as Wellness Partner; Appeton as Nutrition Partner; and Gold as Grooming Partner. Dialog continues as Tournament Sponsor, with Kottu Mee as Hot and Spicy Partner and Koko Kiddies Land as Furniture Partner.

The felicitation followed the season launch held earlier this year at the Hilton Colombo and served as a platform to recognise the collective backing behind the team.

Commenting on the occasion, the Rugby Management and Development Committee Chairperson Kalum Rodrigo, noted that the continued success of Isipathana rugby is driven by the commitment of players, coaches, administrators, sponsors, and supporters.

Today, Isipathana College rugby continues to stand as a symbol of excellence, leadership, and sportsmanship. With a rich heritage and a forward-looking approach, the Green Machine remains an inspiration to young players on and off the field.
