- Vijitha Kumara on his venture ‘A Taste of Heaven’
No celebration is complete without cake, be it birthdays or anniversaries. Though most of us are well into our adulthood, we still get as excited as any kid when we get to blow out the candles on our birthday cakes. However, unlike the sugar flowers and simple buttercream frosting we remember from our childhoods, bakeries today have elevated cake decorations to confectionary works of art.
This is true of A Taste of Heaven, which is on hand to answer all your cake needs, whether you are looking for a cake for a wedding, birthday, or any other celebration, from fondants to more traditional cakes on offer in a range of flavours.

Falling in love with cake-making
A Taste of Heaven Founder Vijitha Kumara is known for creating realistic-looking cakes that resemble everyday objects and characters, from detailed drip cakes to cartoon characters. “I fell in love with creating art through cakes after watching my older sister bake. After a few years of cookery training, I started working at a famous bakery on and off for several years where I gained years of valuable experience. I joined the company for an entry-level position and was able to work my way up through to a sous chef position, which I am really proud of. After being in the field for more than 20 years and with the experience I gained through working at other renowned cafes in Sri Lanka and the Middle East I felt ready to start my own venture,” Vijitha explained.
After working in a popular bakery, Vijitha thus decided to pursue his dream of having his own business. Vijitha’s creations range from hyper-realistic cake renditions of characters and objects to grandiose, larger-than-life creations made with incredible intricacy and attention to detail. “I had the privilege to design a cake for Shirani Priyasad, the beloved mother of actors Shanudrie, Dinakshie and Sheshadrie Priyasad. This was also one of the most creative cakes I have done and the pictures that were posted on their social media helped me get recognised and grow my following. I consider this to be my break and as many inquiries followed through,” Vijitha noted.
Known as a celebrity cake maker, Vijitha and his page have garnered a huge following on social media for the gorgeous cakes. A Taste of Heaven has over 30,000 likes on Facebook.
Specialisations
With years of experience under his belt, he is no stranger to crafting dramatic cakes. Cartoon-themed designs are also a popular choice with his customers, so you can definitely expect elaborate pieces. A Taste of Heaven has a knack for making lavish cakes that give you uber-luxurious vibes. From gold-painted cakes to hand-drawn flowers that are reminiscent of regal colonial days, Vijitha is experienced in making any cake look ultra-classy.
He is a qualified flower piping master, so each design really does look like they’re flowers right out of a fresh bouquet. An insane amount of detail goes into each flower, even if it’s as small as a fingertip. From the buds to the petals, we can see that the baker mastered the craft long ago.
“Wedding trends change over the years. A large tiered cake or structured cake was traditional for wedding cakes when I started out but over the past few years there’s been a shift to a single tier and simpler cakes,” Vijitha said.
They are on a mission to create custom, tasteful cakes and cupcakes to satisfy all celebratory events, as well as everyday cravings. Vijitha also specialises in all sorts of cake shapes, so let your imagination run wild. For any and all of life’s special moments, you need a cake that’s equally as special to celebrate. Whether you’re planning an intimate shower, a detail-oriented wedding day, or an all-out birthday party extravaganza, Vijitha is here to cater to your individualised needs.
He remarked that social media has helped him reach new clients for custom birthday and wedding cakes and has contributed to their success. Vijitha strongly believes in the motto “never stop learning” and is always trialling new techniques for icing that can be incorporated into his intricate designs. “I take pride in each and every one of my designs. The time, inspiration, dedication, heart, soul, and challenge of each design is what makes me feel proud. I fell in love with the process rather than the actual finished product,” he concluded.
