The government has decided to discontinue the proposed Kinniya University project in the Trincomalee District and transfer the reserved land and partially completed constructions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism. 

The site, a 12-acre plot in Upparu owned by the Land Reformation Commission, had been approved for university development in 2017, with Rs. 25.45 million spent to date. 

The University of Vocational Technology determined that the project was no longer required. 

The Cabinet approved the transfer for use in a tourism initiative proposed by the Trincomalee District Coordination Committee.
