Sri Lanka U19 suffer second successive defeat

Sri Lanka Under-19 was beaten by Bangladesh U19 by five wickets at the Tolerance Oval stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The Young Bangla Tigers produced a clutch performance in the do-or-die game to stay alive in the tournament. Shevon Daniel won the toss and decided to bat first. Nothing went to plan for the young lions who lost five of their top-six batters inside the first 12 overs.

However, Dinura Kalupahana and Hiran Jayasundara added a 59-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Unfortunately, Kalupahana missed out on a deserving half century and both of the set batters fell in quick succession.

Malsha Tharupathi and Vishwa Rajapakse added 44 runs for the eighth wicket. Tharupathi scored a brisk innings of 46 from just 37 balls as Sri Lanka U19 got cleaned up for 215.

For Bangladesh Mohommad Borson and Maruf Mridha took three wickets each. Tanvir Ahammed also chipped in with two wickets for the Young Tigers.

Bangladesh U19’s chase began with Jishan Alam scoring a blitzkrieg 62 off 32 deliveries.

Kalupahana managed to dismiss the dangerous Alam but Sri Lanka wasn't allowed to come into the game thanks to some sensible batting. Skipper Ahrar Almin led his team over the line with a 44 off 80 as they reached the finishing line with five wickets and 13 balls to spare.

Kalupahana was the pick of the bowlers and took two wickets for 41 for Sri Lanka while Duvindu Ranatunga took one for 44. Sri Lanka will now need to win their next encounter against Afghanistan on 28 March at the Tolerance Oval to qualify for the finals of the tri series.
