Rough seas warning

06 Jan 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Department of Meteorology has warned naval and fishing communities to stay alert as a low-pressure area has formed in the Bay of Bengal, southeast of Sri Lanka.

Showers and thundershowers are expected in several sea areas around the island, especially from Kankasanthurai to Matara. Winds may reach 50–60 kmph at times, making sea conditions rough in many coastal areas.

Wave heights could rise to around 2.5 to 3 metres in parts of the eastern and northern seas. Fishermen and naval operators are advised to be cautious.
