New electrician licensing system launched

22 Jan 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Sri Lanka has introduced a new Electrician Licensing System from this year, aimed at enhancing electrical safety and professional standards across the industry.

Regulated under the Sri Lanka Electricity Act and the Sri Lanka Engineering Council Act, the system requires electricians working on connections to the national grid to hold recognized qualifications, starting with NVQ Level 3 from 2026.

To support current electricians, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has launched a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program, offering free training and exams to help them attain necessary qualifications, thereby raising industry standards and expanding employment opportunities locally and abroad.
