Sri Lanka Air Force javelin thrower Corporal Rumesh Tharanga has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant following his historic gold medal victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Tharanga won the men’s javelin throw gold medal with a throw of 89.75 metres at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.

The promotion was awarded today (05) by Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, who also presented Tharanga with a special financial reward.

Cash rewards were also presented to his coach Tony Prasanna and physiotherapist Corporal Chandima Gurusinghe for their contributions to his success.
