  • Madiwela facility under renovation; houses only for official purposes
  • MP’s traveling from far will be accommodated at facility

Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Ashoka Ranwala, yesterday stated that the housing complex for Members of Parliament (MPs) in Madiwela is currently undergoing renovations to accommodate MPs travelling from distant areas, with a decision made not to rent or lease any property for MPs.

Speaking to the media yesterday (1 December), Dr. Ranwala stated that only State-owned official residences would be maintained for governmental purposes. He also clarified the Government’s decision to cease renting or leasing properties for politicians, emphasising cost-efficiency and accountability and stated that such facilities would no longer be available for private use by politicians.

"We (the Government) will not rent out or lease out any property for the use of politicians hereafter. The Government will not afford such since it is a burden. Yet, the official residences owned by the Government will be maintained further. They will be used for official purposes, not for the personal use of politicians,” he said.

The Speaker further highlighted that Parliament had not received any requests from MPs for residential facilities. Additionally, ministers have collectively decided against occupying any Government-owned residences. This move aims to reduce financial burdens and ensure better use of State resources. Dr. Ranwala commented on the condition of the Madiwela housing complex, stating that it had deteriorated due to years of less maintenance. “I paid a field visit to the housing complex. It has deteriorated. Now it is being renovated, and we hope to facilitate MPs who are travelling from distant areas,” he added.

He further noted that most of the MPs have rejected the use of luxury vehicles due to the high cost of maintenance stating that such practices are not suitable for the country. Responding to a question raised by a journalist whether the Government would sell those vehicles, the Speaker said it should come as a policy decision since it is a crucial matter.
