26 Oct 2026 | By Staff Writer

The Irrigation Department has issued a warning of possible minor flooding in low-lying areas of the Kelani River Valley within the next 24 hours following significant rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Kelani River Basin.

According to the department, prevailing rainfall conditions and water levels recorded at river gauging stations indicate a risk of minor flooding in the Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Dehiowita, Eheliyagoda, Yatiyanthota and Bulathkohupitiya Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

Residents in the affected areas and motorists travelling through these locations have been urged to exercise extreme caution in view of the potential flood threat.

The Irrigation Department further warned that if heavy rainfall continues, the flooding could also affect low-lying areas of the Kelani River Valley downstream of Hanwella.

Disaster Management authorities have been requested to take the necessary precautionary measures to minimise potential risks to the public and property.

The general public has been advised to remain vigilant and follow official instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
